The central processing unit (CPU), informally called the processor, is the brain of a computer. It’s called a processor because it processes data and tells other PC components what to do. Faster processors mean a better overall experience, faster application performance, and support for more advanced graphics. All these factors help customers use their PCs to do more at the same time.
The PSU of a PC is most similar to a body’s heart. It keeps things pumping and moving along. Just like a weakened heart will affect a body’s performance, so will a PSU that doesn’t have the correct wattage amount. For example, if a PSU is listed at 350 watts, that means it can support a maximum of 350 watts of components in the PC.
Just as your senses receive inputs for your body to process, a PC’s peripherals, like a keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen display provide inputs for the PC!
RAM is similar to your short-term memory. RAM temporarily stores recently used data (like applications you are currently running or open files) so it can be accessed quickly to complete the task at hand—just like the info you know right off the top of your head!
More RAM, and faster RAM, will help improve a PC’s performance. The data stored in RAM is lost when the computer loses power which is why an unsaved document is lost if the computer crashes/there is a power failure.
A PC’s outer shell, or chassis (also known as a cabinet or a case) acts like a body’s skin and protects a PC from dust, temperature, drops, and other environmental issues. It’s just like your skin, which acts as a protective layer for your body. Today’s modern chassis are nothing like the boring grey and black cases from years ago. Today, there are tons of different styles, colors, and textures to choose from.
Compare the motherboard of a PC to the nervous system, which communicates between all parts of your body. The CPU provides directions, and then the motherboard communicates with all the other key components in the PC—graphics cards, memory, storage drives, and even wireless technologies—to ensure the CPU’s tasks are completed.
Storage works like your long-term memory. It’s data that may not be used frequently, but it’s pretty important to save, keep, and use when necessary! Pictures, videos, and other data your customers need to save for a long time are usually stored there.
Think of computer storage like a box of pictures in your attic – when you need to access an item that’s in storage, you have to go locate it and it takes a while.
Data in storage can be stored on a hard disk drive (HDD), a solid-state drive (SSD), or even a hybrid of the two! SSDs typically provide faster access to data and start up times, and are very reliable and durable, as they have no moving parts.
